Maria Buckingham

Maria is a registered nurse and experienced healthcare educator with a strong commitment to advancing skin cancer surveillance practice in Australia. She began her career in the UK, specialising in reconstructive plastic surgery nursing and burns intensive care, before moving into dermatology nursing in Australia, where she developed a strong focus on skin cancer detection and surveillance.
She has extensive experience managing nationwide skin cancer surveillance clinics and has contributed to the development of key principles and standards that underpin best practice in this field.
Alongside her clinical work, Maria has established a respected career in healthcare education, designing and delivering specialised training programs in dermoscopy and total body imaging, and is known for her engaging and practical teaching style.
Maria has contributed to the development of artificial intelligence in skin cancer diagnosis and has a particular interest in strengthening quality and governance within surveillance services.
In collaboration with the Australasian College of Dermatologists, she participated in the development of the Certificate in Melanography Essentials and has been an assessor and facilitator for the course since 2016, supporting clinicians in this evolving area of practice.
