This course uses a range of online learning strategies, including tutorials, discussion forums and videos of practical demonstrations. Participants are expected to engage with all course components to successfully complete the Certificate of Melanography Essentials.
From Trimester 2, 2026 onward, this course will be delivered fully online.
Students who want additional practical training may attend an optional on‑demand workshop from Trimester 3, 2026 (additional fee applies).

Workshops
Workshops
In addition to the e‑learning content, participants are required to attend two online workshops delivered via webinar.
Workshop 1: Skin Assessment and Imaging in Melanography
Workshop 1 provides the participant with the opportunity to consolidate learning in preparation for practice. Through discussion and activities, the participant will explore the knowledge and skills required for conducting skin and lesion assessment and taking images.
At the end of the workshop the learner will demonstrate the following learning objectives:
- Describe a skin assessment using a standardised assessment sequence.
- Explain the use of a dermatoscope.
- Recognise dermoscopic features of melanocytic lesions within in a series of lesion images.
- Outline the principles for total body photography and lesion imaging.
- Recognise the components of acceptable image quality to meet quality standards in photography.
Workshop 2: Concepts for Melanography Practice
Workshop 2 provides the participant with the opportunity to consolidate learning in preparation for practice. Through discussion and activities, the participant will explore the communication skills and health education information required for conducting skin and lesion assessment and taking images.
At the end of the workshop the learner will demonstrate the following learning objectives:
- Demonstrate recognition of dermoscopic features of melanocytic lesions within in a series of lesion images.
- Discuss skin cancer risk and health education considerations
- Recognise dermoscopic features of keratinocyte lesions and other lesions with cutaneous manifestations within a series of lesion images.
- Outline privacy and confidentiality considerations when taking images for surveillance and diagnosis purposes
On-demand Face to Face Workshop
On-demand Face to Face Workshop
This optional workshop is available for learners who prefer inperson training. It is scheduled on demand and will only run when minimum registration numbers are met.
Assessments
Assessments
There are a range of formative and summative assessments in this course. Each Module has an end of section knowledge quiz that participants complete.
Assessment activities include:
- Online investigations
- Categorisation activities
- Multiple‑choice quizzes
- Clinical Case Study
- A short research paper

Course Fees
One course fee includes access to the course for the duration of study including all learning material and resources.
- $839 (Plus GST)
A 10% GST charge applies to all course fees and is calculated at the checkout.

Course Dates
You will receive access to your course for 16 weeks from time of enrolment. However, the interactive elements relevant to the course, such as webinars and workshops will only occur during Trimester times.
It is important that you enrol in this course before the first online workshop date of the relevant Trimester. If you enrol after this date, your course will only start in the following trimester.
All workshops are mandatory. Please only enrol in this course if you are available on the below dates.

Course Learning Outcomes
Course Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of skin anatomy, physiology and histopathology to Melanography practice
- Describe skin cancer pathology and relate this to visible lesion features
- Explain the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin
- Provide education to patients about skin cancer and its prevention
- Conduct a thorough visual skin cancer assessment of a patient
- Recognize skin lesions using clinical and dermoscopic criteria
- Accurately identify skin lesions that require photographic imaging for diagnosis and or surveillance
- Demonstrate competent skin photography skills
- Carry out total body and individual lesion photography in accordance with a quality standard.
- Identify key elements for a melanographer to run a clinic efficiently and safely.
- Outline legal consideration pertinent to Melanography practice
